31/12/10: Warm Are The Sounds / Crystal Silence

1973. Chick Corea / Gary Burton – Crystal Silence (ECM vinyl LP). Beautiful 'vibes'. Fills you with wellbeing.
Photobucket
2010. The NoMen – Warm Are The Sounds. The mighty NoMen's Christian Rock album. See the Topplers site for details.
Photobucket
2002. Belle & Sebastian – Storytelling. A lovely soundtrack album, with quite a few instrumentals and short bits of dialogue. None of it feels like filler, though.

30/12/10: Soundtracks

1970. Can – Soundtracks. Contains 'Mother Sky', their greatest track. An amazing piece of music.
Photobucket
Julian Cope had this to say about the album in his Krautrocksampler:
Photobucket
Photobucket
2003. Kraftwerk – Tour de France Soundtracks. I was disappointed with this when it came out, and still think it's their worst album by a long way. The title track is great, but that was recorded 20 years previously. As for the rest: where are the melodies? Where's the sense of magic and beauty you can hear on the previous records?
Photobucket
1974. Terje Rypdal – What Comes After (vinyl LP). More ECM jazz. 'Impressionistic' use of funky bass and percussion. Not sure. Need to play this more.
Photobucket

Plus: 'Runaway' by Del Shannon, three times in a row.

29/12/10: NoMenclature

2010. NoMen – NoMenclature. A CD given away with Ice Cream For Quo issue 13, thanks to the lovely people at Topplers Records. Details here: http://www.topplers.net/ICFQ/index.html
Photobucket
1967. Captain Beefheart – Safe as Milk. Tremendous. Still sounds fresh, too.
Photobucket
1974. Ralph Towner – Diary (vinyl LP). More ECM jazz. '12-string and classical guitar, piano, gongs'. Very pretty in places.
Photobucket
Plus, some Belle & Sebastian favourites. Their albums often seem patchy (band too 'democratic'?), but when the songs are good they are very, very good:

We Rule The School • Tigermilk [1996]
Women's Realm • Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant [2000]
The Wrong Girl • Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant [2000]
The Fox In The Snow • If You're Feeling Sinister [1996]
This Is Just A Modern Rock Song • Push Barman To Open Old Wounds
I'm Waking Up To Us • Push Barman To Open Old Wounds
We Rule The School [BBC version]
I Fought In A War • Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant [2000]
Slow Grafitti • Push Barman To Open Old Wounds
The Boy With The Arab Strap • The Boy With The Arab Strap [1998]
The Model • Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant [2000]

28/12/10 (A): Heavy cold, part 1

1965. Rolling Stones – December's Children (and Everybody's). Some very good stuff mixed with fairly ordinary blues covers. Hard to sense from this that within months they would be making some of the greatest music ever made. Listened to this at 4 a.m. due to heavy cold inhibiting sleep. The same cold meant I was stuck in all day and treated myself to listening to more music than is usually possible – as detailed below.
Photobucket
1969. Miles Davis – In a Silent Way. A lovely, ambient thing.
Photobucket
1972. Miles Davis – On the Corner. Wild and thrilling.
Photobucket
1974. Eberhard Weber – The Colours of Chloë (vinyl LP). Pretty, highly atmospheric ECM jazz album with cello, ocarina, synth, flugelhorn, etc. Occasional prog elements.
Photobucket

28/12/10 (B): Heavy cold, part 2

1975. Klaus Schulze – Timewind (vinyl LP). Truly beautiful long, synthy drones.
Photobucket
1977. Ken Hyder's Talisker – Land of Stone (vinyl LP). Genuinely bizarre Arts Council-funded jazz/folk hybrid in which Ken and pals use jazz to recreate traditional Scottish music (sax imitates bagpipes, etc). Some of the chanting is quite intimidating.
Photobucket
1989. David Sylvian and Holger Czukay – Flux + Mutability. Two long instrumental tracks, with three members of Can featured. Relaxing and 'ambient' without going too blandly 'new age'.

27/12/10: Brilliant Trees and Golden Greats

1984. David Sylvian – Brilliant Trees. I'm not too keen on that 'sterile funk' thing he does at times, but the mellow moments are lovely.
Photobucket
1978. Buddy Holly – 20 Golden Greats. Brilliant compilation. Still sounds fresh and new to me. Shame about the cover, though.

26/12/10: John Klemmer, Del Shannon, computer game music

1969. John Klemmer – Blowin' Gold (vinyl LP on the mysterious Cadet Concept label). Excellent jazz/rock album including covers of 'Hey Jude' and a Hendrix song.
Photobucket
1966. The Best of Del Shannon (vinyl LP). The majestic 'Runaway' (one of the best four or five pop singles of all time), and several other songs that sound a bit like 'Runaway' but aren't quite as good. Played 'Runaway' five times.
Photobucket
2000. Input 64: A Collection of Commodore 64 Game Music 1984–1989. Brilliant. Sounds as compressed and weird as the tracks did coming out of computers in the 1980s. Oddly moving in places, too.

24/12/10: Glennie/Gheorghe

1990. Evelyn Glennie – Rhythm Song. Very nice, in places. She makes jewellery now.
Photobucket
1976 (probably). Gheorghe Zamfir – A Theme from Picnic at Hanging Rock. I saw the film Picnic at Hanging Rock when I was a lot younger and found it deeply disturbing. I'd love to see it again. Played this vinyl record for the first time today. It seems to be 'music inspired by' rather than a 'proper' soundtrack album. Lovely, haunting stuff.
Photobucket
2005. Is It Rolling Bob?: Dub Versions (Visions of Jamaica). Somehow disappointing compilation of dub Dylan covers. I don't really enjoy post-1970s reggae – something about the production sound.

22/12/10: It's a world of dread and fear...

More Xmas music in Coffee Republic. I knew it was time to leave when Band Aid came round for the third time.
+
2010. The Smiths – Unreleased Demos & Instrumentals. After hearing the familiar versions so many times, this is a revelation: the trumpet on 'Frankly, Mr Shankly', the different lyrics on 'Paint a Vulgar Picture' (including the title phrase itself), the early/edgy 'Rusholme Ruffians', a creepy 'Death of a Disco Dancer', and 'Sheila Take a Bow' with odd instrumentation (and Morrissey singing with a cold). What a treat!

20/12/10: The Great Memphis Sound

1966. The Mar-keys – The Great Memphis Sound (vinyl LP). A sound, from Memphis, that is indeed great.

1970. Miles Davis – Bitches Brew. I like the fact that, as with Metal Machine Music, you can start listening almost anywhere and get pretty much the same effect.

At the barber, was forced to listen to Capital Radio for a few minutes and heard that truly awful cover version of D. Bowie's 'Heroes' again. Capital treats its listeners like complete idiots. It's incredibly dumbed down and patronising radio, with awful music, awful presenters and a general air of market-researched-to-death pointlessness about it.

02/12/10: Üdü Wüdü

1976. Magma – Üdü Wüdü. Remarkable French prog, sung in Magma's own invented language.

01/12/10: Pilates music (week 24)

Very quiet this week, due to baby sleeping in pram in corner. Hard-to-hear dance and classical. Possibly.
